Taxonomy, Systematics, and New systematics

  • Taxis = arrangement and nomos = law
  • Taxonomy is the study of principles and procedures of classification
  • In other words forming the rules for classification known as taxonomy
  • This word was proposed A. P. de. Candolle in his book “Theories elementaire de la botanique” (Theory of elementary botany)

Taxonomy includes study of:

  1. Identification:An organism is recognized and assigned to a particular taxonomic group.
  2. Nomenclature:Organism is named according to international scientific rules.
  3. Classification: Organism is grouped into convenient categories on the basis of some easily observable characters.
  • Systematics:
    • Term “Systematics“ was proposed by Linnaeus.
    • It is derived from the Latin word “systema” which means systematic arrangement of organisms.
    • It includes description of external morphological characters of plants or living organisms.
  • New systematics:
    • Also known as Neo systematics or Biosystematics.
    • Its Name was given by Julian Huxley (1940).
    • •Includes description of all external and internal structures, along with the structure of cell, development process & ecological information of organisms.
  • New systematics is used to know:   ?

    • It is mainly based on evolutionary as well as genetic relationship as compared to morphological characters.
