History of Taxonomy

Theophrastus (371-287 BC):

  • He is often called as the “Father of botany
  • His work: Enquiry into plants (Historia Plantarum)
  • He is also known as “Father of ancient plant taxonomy”

Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778):

  • He was also k/a Carl Von Linne
  • He formalized the Binomial Nomenclature
  • He is known as “Father of modern taxonomy”.
  • His work: Species plantarum, Systema Naturae, Hortus cliffortianus & Genera Plantarum.

Aristotle (384-322 BC):

  • He is regarded as: father of biology and zoology

John Ray (1627–1705):

  • He coined the term species.  It is a basic unit of classification.

Ernst Mayr (1904-2004):

  • He is called as “The Darwin of the 20th century”
  • He also pioneered the definition of a biological species.
